Creating an inviting space for a collection of small art deco and art nouveau sculptures was no small task!
THE CHALLENGE: Displaying a large collection of small objects.
The homeowner’s collection of diminutive Viennese antiques had outgrown her display cabinet and the actual pieces in the collection were really small. The largest piece in the collection is only 12” tall and the smallest about 2”. Think Thumbelina. The real challenge was to design a space large enough to accommodate future collection additions and highlight the individual detail and beauty of the tiny statues.
THE SOLUTION: A custom built-in cabinet with display area for the most exquisite sculpture, flanked by two bays with shelving for the other objets d’art.
Textured basket weave wallcovering lines the bays and accentuates the smooth metal sculptures on the shelves. Shelves were placed at eye level so that the smallest sculptures could be viewed intimately. The figurines were placed on optical glass stands at varying levels to create separation without distraction. And mirrors were strategically placed to reflect the backs and sides of every sculpture.
